Planning a trip to Austin? Our experienced travel editors break down the town so you can make the most of your stay. Let these itineraries be your guide, whether you're here for a weekend or a whole week.
  • Day 1
  • 1 Start with breakfast tacos at Juan in a Million.
  • 2 Try your hand at stand-up paddling, or rent a canoe on Lady Bird Lake.
  • 3 Break for lunch at the food trailer park on South Congress—try the Mighty Cone, an ACL Festival favorite.
  • 4 Buy a groovy Western shirt—or your first pair of boots—at Allen’s Boots on South Congress.
  • 5 Grab a late-afternoon cocktail at the rooftop bar at Malverde.
  • 6 Check out the bats swooping out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge on a Lonestar Riverboat bat cruise around Lady Bird Lake.
  • 7 Put on something chic to get ready for dinner at Uchi on South Lamar Boulevard.
  • 8 Catch some live music at the Broken Spoke
  • Day 2
  • 1 Have breakfast at the hotel—The Driskill has great pastries at its 1886 Café & Bakery.
  • 2 Go for a walk around Zilker Park and try your hand at Frisbee golf, or tour the park on the Zilker Train near Barton Springs.
  • 3 Drive around Tarrytown, and check out the expensive houses on Lake Austin and in the surrounding neighborhood.
  • 4 Enjoy lunch on the deck overlooking Lake Austin at the Hula Hut. 
  • 5 Turn the guys loose to hit a bucket of balls at the Lions Municipal Golf Course, while the girls sunbathe and relax in the cool waters of Deep Eddy Pool.
  • 6 Enjoy a casual dinner and live music on the patio at Central Market.
  • Day 3
  • 1 Start with coffee and bagels on the patio at Jo’s on South Congress or go inside at the Second Street District location.
  • 2 Take a tour of the LBJ Library & Museum.
  • 3 Grab lunch at the Hyde Park Bar & Grill, and don’t miss the French fries.
  • 4 Walk off the beer and fried food with a stroll around the “40 Acres," The University of Texas campus. Take pictures at the Littlefield Fountain—the one with the galloping horses by sculptor Pompeo Coppini.
  • 5 Head across the street to the University of Texas bookstore to pick up Longhorn gear.
  • 6 Go next door to the open-air market on Guadalupe, with the hippies selling beads, bongs and more, to grab some funky jewelry for your 14-year-old niece.
  • 7 Continue your campus/Guadalupe shopping tour with a stop at Toy Joy and Buffalo Exchange—and plan to stay a while at both to dig for goodies.
  • 8 Enjoy delicious deli food at Wheatsville Co-op on Guadalupe for an easy, low-stress dinner.
  • 9 Head to Sixth Street to wander the streets like a college student, going in and out of clubs and bars when you hear music you like.
  • Day 4
  • 1 Grab food to go from the hotel, and spend the morning hiking at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.
  • 2 Head to lunch at the Ausländer Biergarten in nearby Fredericksburg, and don’t miss the Bavarian Potato Skins.
  • 3 Walk off lunch with a stroll up and down Main Street in Fredericksburg to browse the shops.
  • 4 Head back toward Austin, but make a detour for dinner at The Salt Lick on the way back.
  • 5 Dance off all that barbecue goodness at Elysium.
  • Day 5
  • 1 Start with scrambled eggs with lox and onions—or a huge bagel—at Katz’s Deli.
  • 2 Head to girls’ day at Lake Austin Spa Resort for a half-day of pampering and massages, while the guys hit the links.
  • 3 Meet for lunch at The Oasis overlooking Lake Travis. Don’t forget the camera!
  • 4 Spend the day on Lake Travis at Pace Bend Park, and rent a wave runner for lakeside fun.
  • 5 Bring a change of clothes, shower at the park and head to dinner at Hudson’s on the Bend.
  • 6 Once back in Austin, stop in at Six Lounge for an after-dinner cocktail on the way back to the hotel.
  • Day 6
  • 1 Grab breakfast tacos at one of the trailers on South First Street on the way out of town to San Marcos.
  • 2 Spend a few hours shopping at Prime Outlets and Tanger Outlets in San Marcos. Don't miss Neiman Marcus’ Last Call for great designer deals. Grab lunch at the food court here.
  • 3 Head back to Austin, and stop at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for a tour.
  • 4 Take a well-deserved nap back at the hotel, and get ready for a comfort-food dinner at casual Threadgill’s.
  • 5 Stay for the live music at Threadgill’s, or head to Antone’s to catch Austin favorite Bob Schneider or his alter-ego band, The Scabs.
  • Day 7
  • 1 Get breakfast to go from the hotel and hit the exhibits at Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.
  • 2 Catch a short film about the history of Texas in the Bullock Museum’s IMAX Theater, and take pictures with the big star at the entrance to the museum.
  • 3 Stop for lunch and a beer at Opal Divine’s on West Sixth Street.
  • 4 Enjoy an afternoon of browsing at BookPeople and Waterloo Records.
  • 5 Buy an outfit for dinner from By George at Sixth and Lamar.
  • 6 Have dinner at Lambert’s Downtown Barbecue in the Second Street District.
  • 7 Grab an organic frozen yogurt at tart, also in the Second Street District.
  • 8 Head to Donn’s Depot for a cold beer and live music, or go fancy and head to the bar at the Four Seasons for the $95 margarita made with tequila aged in French oak.
