House Pizzeria, Austin

This eatery captures one of the aspects of the essence that is Austin: the laid-back University of Texas student. The young staff includes a male cook wearing a fedora, a male server donning neon wayfarers, and a female server in a spike hairdo. The jukebox near the middle of the room is chock full of albums from retro bands, such as The Cars, and underground hip-hop stars, like M.I.A. Crunchy black pepper and fennel breadsticks are complimentary, but, unfortunately, the pizzas aren't. The Genoa salami pizza features salami sitting atop stringy white cheddar, onions and tomato sauce, while it is the oil that gives the Italian sausage and mushroom pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella, and roasted red peppers its wonderful flavor. -Freddie Obregon
