Houston Pop Culture

Watch Tom Hanks as astronaut Jim Lovell in "Apollo 13" to get your mindset in ‘Space City mode’ before your visit to Space Center Houston. "Charlie Wilson’s War" will give you insight into Houston socialite Joanne Herring and her influence in helping Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson in the U.S. efforts to help assist Afghanistan in fighting off Soviet occupation of the country. A fictional movie set in Houston is "Terms of Endearment" with Shirley MacLaine, a romantic comedy about a wealthy and neurotic Houstonian mother and her daughter—set in River Oaks. "Urban Cowboy", starring John Travolta, shows the Houston bar Gilley’s, though in many ways, the cowboys-and-country-western impression of Texas many outsiders have—and given by this film—does not fit today’s modern, multicultural Houston. There’s also "Houston It’s Worth It: Ike", a neat little book that chronicled life during the power outages of Hurricane Ike with photos and stories. The authors have a website by the same name. And as far as music goes, the world-famous Beyoncé hails from Houston.
