Best Park City Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors
The swanky crowd that frequents Park City likes its luxe lodgings, so you’ll find some amazing—and pricey—hotels in the Park City area, especially Deer Valley.  But you can also rest your head at far more affordable, basic accommodations after a hard day of hitting the slopes. Many of the area’s hotels feature condo-like amenities, including full-kitchens, for visitors who want to make the most of their days and spend quiet, more affordable nights cooking dinner at home. Visitors prone to high-altitude sickness may want to consider their lodging choices accordingly. Some locations, like parts of Deer Valley, are set 1,000 feet above Park City, which can be a drawback.  But, stay hydrated, and you should be just fine at any resort. Prices vary wildly depending on the season, so if you’re on a budget, try to visit in the Summer/Fall.

Montage Deer Valley

Neighborhood: Deer Valley Price Range: Expensive
Montage may be known for its ultra-exclusive resorts in Laguna Beach, Beverly Hills and Cabo, but when its Deer Valley property opens in December 2010, it will become the only hotel chain to feature the EPA’s first national ER3 (Environmental Responsible Redevelopment and Reuse) project. While the new 174-room resort located mid-mountain in Empire Canyon area near the top of swanky Deer Valley Ski Resort will, indeed, be eco-friendly, it’s not missing a lot of tricks. The Craftsman-style Mountain Lodge features an outdoor pool and spa; a 35,000-square-foot spa; ski and bike concierges; and bowling lanes, billiards and a game room to keep guests entertained for all four seasons at the resort’s Daly’s Pub & Rec. Or, simply hole up in your guestroom in front of the gas fireplace and appreciate the luxe surroundings.

The Sky Lodge

Neighborhood: Park City Mountain Resort Price Range: Expensive
Located in the center of town with stunning views of the Wasatch Mountains, this exclusive 33-room hotel is more SoHo than mountains, with modern one-, two- and three-bedroom residences decorated with flat screen TVs, original artwork, full kitchens with granite countertops and giant tubs with waterfall spouts. At this pricetag, you’ll want to take advantage of complimentary cocktails and appetizers in the hotel’s fourth-floor Sky Blue, which includes a beautiful outdoor patio with a 12-person hot tub. The hotel’s Japanese-inspired Amatsu spa is a great place to relax, or hit the fitness center with an indoor two-lane heated pool. The resort developers have had their financial struggles and recently filed bankruptcy, but even during the financial restructuring, the resort has continued to operate without missing a beat.

Silver Queen Hotel

Neighborhood: Park City Mountain Resort Price Range: Expensive
Created by local interior designer/real estate investor Jana Potter, this petit boutique hotel is set in a 1985 replica of an historic building. Though the designs can be a little over-the-top (hallways are decorated with Victorian wallpaper reproductions and leopard-spotted carpeting), the hotel boasts 12 individually decorated one- or two-bedroom guest rooms, featuring four stylish themes (Asian, Whimsical, Mountain, Urban). Each comes with a fully equipped kitchen stocked with whatever treats you request, DVD players, fireplaces and fresh flowers. There’s a Jacuzzi and bar on the roof for après ski soaks.  During summers, rates are significantly less, so that may be the season to visit. Park City Mountain Resort

Stein Eriksen Lodge

Neighborhood: Deer Valley Price Range: Expensive
Singer-songwriter Josh Kelley and actress Katherine Heigl chose this Alpine-style hotel for the marriage ceremony in 2007. Perhaps it was the hotel’s giant timber beams, boulders, beautifully landscaped grounds and Scandinavian charm that lured the couple to the five-star hotel to celebrate their special day. And if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us. Opened in 1982 by Norwegian 1952 Olympic gold medalist Stein Erikson, the elegant lodge sits mid-mountain in Deer Valley, with rooms spread out across several building that are connected by heated sidewalks. Guestrooms are big, with vaulted ceilings, solid wood furnishings and giant whirlpool tub. The resort’s Glitretind Restaurant repeatedly wins raves, especially for its weekend seafood buffet.

Sundance Resort The Sundance Resort

Sundance Resort

Neighborhood: Park City Outskirts Price Range: Expensive
Robert Redford’s mountain resort at the base of Mt. Timpanogos feels more like a community than a hotel. The famous actor purchased the scenic 5,000-acre property in 1969, with a vision for creating an artistic, eco-friendly environment. Today, his resort features a main lodge which houses a general store and several dining options. Guest accommodations (studios, suites and mountain homes) are in additional buildings trellised up the mountainside, with each room individually decorated with rough-hewn wood, Native American accents and ipod/MP3 docking stations. All bathrooms are stocked with organic toiletries made with extracts of rooibos, cardamom seed, yarrow and ginseng. Sundance offers its own ski mountain with 41 runs and cross-country skiing trails during the winter months; summers are for hiking and mountain biking. The resort’s Art Shack lets guests explore their creative side with pottery, printmaking and painting classes.

Waldorf Astoria Park City

Waldorf Astoria Park City

Neighborhood: Park City Outskirts Price Range: Expensive
Situated in The Canyons Resort, this 175-room hotel, formerly known as the Dakota Mountain Lodge, opened in Summer 2009 to rave reviews. In keeping with its namesake’s tradition for posh amenities, the resort’s guestrooms offer beautiful views, lovely furnishings and comfy beds dressed with high thread-count linens. Standard rooms are small, so you may want to spring for an upgrade to a suite if you can swing it, many of which offer fully stocked kitchens. The Canyons ski resort is just out the front door, but the hotel offers free shuttle/car service to Park City and Deer Valley (as well as downtown) if you want to try the other resorts. The resort’s Golden Door Spa is spendy, but if money’s not an issue, it’s a nice splurge. Be sure and use the well-equipped fitness center and outdoor pool, because you’re paying for it with a $25 a day mandatory resort fee.

Shadow Ridge Resort Hotel

Neighborhood: Park City Outskirts Price Range: Moderate
This condo hotel across the street from Park City Mountain Resort features 52 individually owned studio, one- and two-bedroom condos, with limited onsite management.  Be careful when reserving a room to review your individual unit, as they can vary widely. However, many are newly remodeled with beautiful furnishings and fully stocked kitchens.  Check out the Platinum Level rooms first, as they tend to offer the best accommodations. Utah Ski and Golf is located in the hotel lobby, so it’s convenient to rent skis or clubs, depending on when you visit. The building’s small outdoor pool is heated during winter, but you might want to opt for the indoor Jacuzzi when it’s really cold out.  Maid service is extra, and the building’s Wi-Fi can be iffy (as it is in many hotels these days). The hotel is located on Park City’s free bus route.
