For people who grew up in Charlottesville, it always felt like there was nothing to do at night. There was never much in the way of a club scene, and everything closes kind of early. Your options are severely limited if you’re under 21, because most of the night life in C-ville revolves around drinking at bars, but there’s also a great local music and arts scene, so there’s always a play or a concert to check out, and the prices at venues around town are all pretty reasonable. If you’re looking for a party, though, you’re going to have to hang around the bars on The Corner and try to score an invitation to a UVA frat party—and UVA is known for its Greek scene. If you just want to find the best place in town to throw back a cold one, maybe even a local brew, try one of these bars.
Charlottesville loves pub trivia, and the best weekly game is found at McGrady’s, starting at 8pm every Tuesday. The happy hour specials at McGrady’s can’t be beat, and the pub gets packed for trivia, so if you want to play, come early to secure a seat. More like early evening than nightlife, but it’s fun hangout nonetheless.

This is the place where all the young professionals in Charlottesville go to loosen their ties at night. It’s kind of like a breeding ground for new yuppies. But the drinks are good, the menu has some top notch comfort foods, and it’s not as pretentious as it sounds. Or maybe it is—but pretension is also very much a Charlottesville thing.

Boylan Heights is a gourmet burger and sports bar located on the Corner. It’s one of the more upscale UVA hangouts, with lots of seating downstairs at the bar and dining tables and a lounge upstairs. Boylan has only been around for a little over a year, but it’s already a favorite for Cavaliers and Charlottesville visitors.

While his band never played here, Dave Matthews used to tend bar at Miller's. It’s probably the history more than the menu or the ambiance that makes this a favorite for locals. Really it’s just your average bar, kind of loud and dirty with pool tables upstairs, but it’s Dave’s bar. And that makes it Charlottesville’s bar.
