Best Williamsburg Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors

The hotel scene in Williamsburg runs from cozy bed and breakfasts to chain hotels and motels to, most interestingly, "home stays" in historical houses. As you might guess, this being the Historic Triangle, there’s a concerted effort to deck out sleeping options in colonial chic. The effort is sometimes over the top, but visitors keep coming back for more. In any case, if you’re looking for a bit of pampering complemented by powdered-wig hospitality, you’re in the right place. Keep in mind, smaller B&Bs may be booked months in advance during the high season.

Williamsburg Inn Colonial Williamsburg Foundation

Williamsburg Inn

Neighborhood: Historic Area Price Range: Expensive

The whole idea behind staying at the Williamsburg Inn is experiencing all the luxury of living in a landed Virginia estate, in the midst of a bunch of landed Virginia estates. It’s an impeccably posh experience put through an 18th-century wringer with modern amenities for a cherry on top. Regency-style furniture, marble fixtures and rooms you could feasibly get lost in—not really, but they are pretty big—all in the heart of the historic area. If you need to be spoiled on your Williamsburg vacation, come here.

Williamsburg White House

Williamsburg White House

Neighborhood: Williamsburg Price Range: Expensive

This B&B is the epitome of Williamsburg’s history-heavy, tweedy tastes: rooms named for presidents and their first ladies (it is the White House, after all); furnishings that reference various romantic images of historical eras, from colonial days (the John and Abigail Adams suite) to World War II (the FDR suite); a "diplomatic" reception room; a JFK library replete with snapshots of John and Jackie, and a common dining area fit for a state dinner. Or breakfast, as the case may be—and they serve up a very lovely breakfast here indeed.

Colonial Houses

Neighborhood: Historic Area Price Range: Expensive

Williamsburg is all about history, and the most interesting places to stay are its actual historical homes. There are 26 properties in the Historic Area where you can feel like you’ve been frozen in history—although not that frozen, as all of these spots come with modern amenities. Some of the homes are one-room boxes of coziness; some are larger "taverns" with up to 16 rooms. Our favorite, especially if it’s snowing, is the technically two-room Orlando Jones Kitchen, with a period daybed with trundle and fireplace on the first floor, and a lovely double bedroom up top.

Newport House B&B

Neighborhood: Williamsburg Price Range: Moderate

How do you know the folks at Newport House are serious about getting the details right? Well, the owners design historic ships. That’s dedication, and if they can put together a boat, you should see what they can do with a B&B. Two rooms are exquisitely adorned with period furniture and canopy beds, and because the guest volume is so low, the owners are keen to help you out with every element of your vacation—if you want. If you just need a little privacy, they’re cool with that, too. It’s all about a 5-minute walk from the Historic Area.

The Fife & Drum Inn

The Fife & Drum Inn

Neighborhood: Historic Area Price Range: Moderate

The family home of A. Webster Hitchens sits smack between the Historic District and William & Mary, as prime as real estate gets in this town. The property, still owned by the Hitchens family, now houses the Fife & Drum, one of the larger B&Bs in town. The nice thing about the Fife is that the owners offer a great variety of rooms and suites (10 in all, including a lovely little separate brick cottage) without sacrificing the individual attention that makes B&B visits so endearing. Be picky if you can, as each room has its own flavor; we prefer the Conservancy Room, with a raised, footed tub and full-curtained canopy bed that oozes (we never thought we’d type this) colonial sex appeal.

Williamsburg Lodge

Neighborhood: Historic Area Price Range: Moderate

If you’re looking to not bust your bank and still have a nice stay in the center of the Historic Area, consider the Lodge. It’s not pure luxury, but it is pretty plush: cypress paneling, hardwood floors and big rooms, some of which get the antiques and 18th-century paintings treatment, 30 of which are decorated in folk art inspired by the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. The adjacent Tazewell Hall, which is part of the lodge, is a nicer bet, as you’ll get an outdoor patio for lounging on balmy colonial nights.

Williamsburg Hospitality House

Williamsburg Hospitality House

Neighborhood: Williamsburg Price Range: Moderate

We offer up the Hospitality House not for any outstanding qualities, other than the fact that it’s low luxury—better than a Holiday Inn—and high volume. It can be tough getting a room here in the season, especially in the smaller B&B-style places. The Hospitality House (really a big hotel; there’s nothing very "house-y" about it) avoids this issue by offering a ton of above average, but not spectacular, rooms. Said rooms, for the record, are not particularly history-themed, which may be refreshing if you’re getting sick of the restored colonial scene.

York River B&B York River Inn Bed and Breakfast

York River B&B

Neighborhood: Williamsburg Price Range: Moderate

As befits a B&B located in a snug brick house in rural Yorktown, the York River feels less like a stately manor house and more like a homey 18th-century chalet. We’re not saying this in any kind of pejorative way; the rustic edges of this place are a bit more inviting than the lacey affectations at Colonial Williamsburg spots. There’s a genuine feel of escape here, complimented by the excellent meals whipped up by the owners (a little more corn pudding, please. And some crab cakes. And the fantastically named "clam-alama-ding-dong"—that's clam pudding, by the way).

Governor's Inn Colonial Williamsburg Foundation

Governor's Inn

Neighborhood: Historic Area Price Range: Budget

The Governor’s is by far your cheapest option within Colonial Williamsburg proper. The rooms aren’t much—what you would find within a roadside hotel, to be honest—but they’re comfy and clean, and you have access to a pool and can lounge around the posher, overpriced Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel next door. It’s fantastically located within a nicely restored building, within walking distance of the Historic Area’s main sites.

Courtyard by Marriott Williamsburg

Neighborhood: Yorktown Price Range: Budget

If you want to avoid the crowds, stay in Yorktown to be closer to its attractions or just find a relatively cheap deal on a room in the area, these corporate chain options fit the bill, even if they’re a bit boring. The Yorktown branch is the nicer one, but the Williamsburg Courtyard is pretty similar (that’s the point of these places, right), and it’s in town, of course. Either way, you’ll be pressed to find this kind of comfort for under three digits elsewhere in the Triangle, so if cleanliness and economy are priorities, head here.

Williamsburg KOA Williamsburg KOA Campground

Williamsburg KOA

Neighborhood: Around Williamsburg Price Range: Budget

Ten miles north of Williamsburg is this Kampgrounds of America site, situated near pretty York River Park. Once within the grounds, you can pitch in your own tent sites, park an RV or rent some Spartan cabins. Given that you’re barely a 15-minute drive from town, this is a good option for the truly budget conscious, assuming you’ve got your own wheels. There are two pools and pretty good Wi-Fi coverage throughout—all the comforts of a hotel minus, well, the hotel.
