For those of you that religiously watch the hit TV show LOST (which I’m anxiously awaiting next season to start), you will instantly recognize Patrick Fischler as the high-strung character Phil, a member of the Dharma Initiative. You may have also caught him in many other hits such as Mad Men and going as far back as Nash Bridges.
Patrick showed off his passion for the arts as he founded and is co-artistic director of the Neurotic Young Urbanites, a Los Angeles theater group created by NYU graduates. Needless to say, Patrick is a very busy man.
We were lucky enough to grab some time with him to talk about where he loves to go to get away from the busy lifestyle and to also a tip he’s learned from his extensive travels.
Is there a destination or travel moment that inspired you, or even changed your life? If so, where and why?
This question is incredibly easy for me to answer. Florence Italy! I went when I was 30 before my wife (Lauren Bowles) and I were married. We fell so in love with it and decided if we were ever to get married we would try to do it there. Cut to 5 years later, Lauren and i with 40 of our friends and family spent the most magical week in Florence. It's an incredibly romantic and magical place. We're hoping to go this summer and take our 1 year old daughter Fia for our 5th anniversary.
What's your biggest pet peeve when you travel?
It's become harder and harder to travel these days. My old school number one pet peeve would have to be when people are overseas (in Europe for example) and get mad that the person they're dealing with doesn't speak English. You're in their country it's not their responsibility to communicate, it's yours!
Where is your favorite place to get it away from it all?
My sister in law has a house up in Montecito near Santa Barbara that we escape to. We've been going for the last 12 years. It's directly on the beach and the minute I step foot out of my car I forget any problems I'm having!
When traveling, what's the very first thing you do when you enter your hotel room?
This may reveal me as a complete control freak but what the hell. First thing I have to make sure the room is not near an elevator. That drives me crazy. When I enter the room the first thing I always do is unpack. I immediately relax once my bags are empty.
As a celebrity, you travel a lot for your job. What are some tips and tricks that you've found to make the journey more comfortable?
I always try to bring a little bit of home with me. I have a pillow I always travel with. It helps me adjust to the new surroundings. And as simple as it may seem dress comfortably for the plane. It really helps to make the journey more comfortable.
Don’t forget to catch more of Patrick as he plays Detective Kenny No Gun on NBC's Southland which returns for its second season on September 25th. Season Two of the acclaimed drama, Mad Men, featuring Patrick as abrasive comic Jimmy Barrett is now available on DVD.
