Infamous Hotels
George Washington may have slept in a lot of places -- but none of those hotels can say anything bad about the first president of the United States, can they? Not so for our list of Infamous Hotel Rooms -- they're famous for all the wrong reasons. They're large and small, lush and plain -- and also the site of some of history's best scandals and celebrity deaths.

Room 871
Hotel: Mayflower Hotel
Location: Washington, DC
Details: He was known as Client 9 in the FBI affidavit, George Fox on the reservation form, and as the governor of New York in reality. This is where Eliot Spitzer -- former federal prosecutor known for his tough stance on crime -- met with call girl Kristen. The room is simply yet elegantly furnished, with gold patterned carpet, dark wood furnishings and a king-sized bed. The hotel opened in 1925 and has a storied past, including its role as host of inaugural balls for every president since Calvin Coolidge.

Hotel: Hotel Chelsea

Details: Sid and Nancy -- two names synonymous with punk rock and tragedy. It was October 12, 1978 when Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols awoke in room 100 of the hotel, then known as The Chelsea, to find his girlfriend Nancy Spungen had been stabbed in the stomach, and died on the bathroom floor. Vicious claimed no memory of the incident and was arrested and charged with murder; he overdosed on heroin a few months later. The room is now part of a larger suite.

Details: Lakers great Kobe Bryant was in town for knee surgery, asked for a tour of the hotel from a front desk clerk, whom he later invited to his suite. Their encounter led to a he says / she says battle, with the woman claiming rape and the married Bryant claiming consensual sex. (Sound familiar?) The woman refused to testify and the charges against Bryant were dropped, but his reputation as one of the NBA's shining stars was forever tarnished. All the rooms at the hotel have since been renumbered.

Details: The graceful and historic Stanley, built in 1909, is where Stephen King is said to have been inspired for his thriller The Shining. Lore has it King stayed at the hotel in room 217 and was inspired by the remote Rocky Mountain location. Not one scene of the film was actually shot here at the Stanley, but there are said to be ghosts at the 138-room hotel. Anyone can take a spooky tour of the hotel with its historian, or simply check into room 217 and see what happens.

Room 538 is where mega televangelist Jim Bakker of the PTL Ministry met up with saucy church secretary Jessica Hahn in December of 1980; she claimed rape, he claimed consensual sex. The scandal resulted in the investigation which landed Bakker in federal prison.

The suite is still available to guests, and includes a private sauna, office, dining room and personal butler.

But the burglars did indeed sleep at the Watergate -- in rooms 214 and 314. Black and white marble floors and a waterfall grace the lobby; guests in addition to the burgling bunch have included Liberace, Katherine Hepburn, Stevie Wonder and plenty of political luminaries.

Smith died of an accidental drug overdose; she was a frequent guest at the hotel.
